In the 1920's, the Loew's chain opened 5 "palaces" huge theaters that were built to show movies and vaudeville.
The Paradise in the Bronx, the Valencia in Queens, the 175th Street Theater in Harlem, and the Jersey Theater in Jersey City. All almost identical. All open in one way or another.
Then there was the Kings Theater in Brooklyn. (Near where I have an office.) I have been in the neighborhood 43 years, and except for a 1 night special performance in the late 70's, it has been unused since the closure as a move theater. The theater was not "twinned" "quadded" or made into any smaller venue. It still has the original 3676 seats, albeit in bad repair.
Today, a 70M projext was announced, to reopen this great space as a performing arts center. Considering that this is about 3 miles south of the Barclay's Centre, home of the Brooklyn Nets, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and about 2 miles noirth of Gershwin Hall at Brooklyn College, the borough will have another great space for the arts.
I live in State Island, and the last of our original great theaters got this kind of makeover a few years ago, and the St. George Theater (home of NBC's Smash btw) has given our borough a similar, restored space, and has been the home many events since it reopened.
Too many of these original theaters have been ruined by being cut into pieces, by "modernization" or, simply by being torn down. Many of you in the HSX community have old theaters that may have been restored, or not. I think of the Fox Theater in Atlanta as an example. 1939 World premier of Gone With the Wind, but today home to national tours of Broadway Shows.
It is great to see it will be restored.
