ODD? Not at all. It's the Olympics Drug-Testing Rules, not the NHL Rules, not the IIHF Rules, not the NHLPA Rules, not Team Sweden Rules.
I can't imagine either Team Sweden nor the IIHF give the OK to be at 190 when the Olympics limit was 150. This has nothing to do with the IOC's other matters. This is a RULES / WADA matter exclusively. The Rules said 150 Maximum - he was at 190, well above what was allowed.
How did he get to 190? If the IIHF and Team Sweden told him that he could scarf 4 Zyrtec-D Pills per Day without going over 150, then obviously they should be Blamed - albeit Backstrom would still be the one receiving the Olympics Penalty.
It would be most helpful for somebody to explain what it was that he took to get to 190 and whose decision it was that resulted in the 190 Positive Test Result.
The logic that he was just taking what he usually took does not Wash (Wash not WASH). This is the Olympics and they have different Rules.
Still Unanswered:
1. How did he get to 190 when the Rules said 150 Maximum?
2. Why was he taking Zyrtec-D at at all for that 14-Day Period?
As for my position on Drug-Testing, I would personally like to see the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB all use WADA and conform to the significantly stricter WADA / Olympics Drug-Testing Rules. Won't happen - I understand why - but that's what I would like to see.
As for the Timing of his Drug-Testing, consider this - had the A Sample and B Sample Results come out within 24 Hours of the Game, Sweden would have had their Victory taken away, given a Loss and Backstrom would have been Ejected from the Olympics immediately per Olympics Policy.
This Matter is exclusively a Rules Matter. He broke the Rules. Still Unanswered - What did he do to Break the Rules and who was Responsible for that.
