6) Overtime
The CFL’s overtime is very similar to the NCAA where both teams get a chance to score from the opponents 35 yard-line. Yet, in the CFL, team’s have to go for a two point conversion after each score. This is just to try and end the overtime session because if the score is still locked after two rounds, the game ends as a tie (almost never ends this way). Not only is this method of overtime fair, it is exciting to watch, something American fans can acknowledge from watching the NCAA.
Although the NFL has improved its overtime rules, it still fails in comparison to the CFL/NCAA. The NFL is the only sport where in overtime one team can lose the game without even getting a chance to touch the ball. It comes down to a coin toss. The winner of the coin toss is put at a huge advantage to win the game. (And they do 60% of the time).
Yes, the rules changed a few years ago, but it still is a poor method. Yes, if the defense makes a stop, than both teams get a chance with the ball and the game will end fairly, but if the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, the game is over. Both teams should be guaranteed a chance with the ball. After two teams have fought for 60 minutes, both deserve to be given the ball offensively. After all, the NBA (5-minute OT), MLB (innings), NHL (face-off), and even soccer allows them t0o (eliminated their golden goal format).
