Green Zone offered an intelligent perspective, and it flopped. Hurt Locker won Best Picture and Best Director, and made under $20M domestic.
Movies like The Kingdom, Body of Lies, etc had big stars and weren't awful (at least, not Lions for Lambs awful) and underperformed. So did personal stories about returning soldiers like Brothers and In The Valley of Elah. Three Kings was too early - 1999 - and I don't think I've even heard of Taxi to the Dark Side.
But speaking purely from a financial perspective, these are expensive movies with little global appeal. Audiences have shown they want heroic movies - like the movies I mentioned plus Captain Phillips, Zero Dark Thirty - and studio heads have to make movies their audience wants or face their investors.
