4 main issues with your statement.
1. Interesting that you switched "trained" with "average".
2. You also changed "self defense" with "rush into".
3. I'm describing situations where law enforcement is not present, and you still need to defend yourself or others. No one had to "figure out" who the bad guy was and who the good mom was.
4. The mom did not get killed, (or any mom or child), the bad guy got killed, because of the mom.
Look at the mans facial expression as he walks up all big and bad with his gun, sticking it in the face of women and children, thinking, I am better than you, I deserve to do whatever I want to anyone I want because I am in charge. So do what I say, when I say it, and if I let you live, feel lucky. I get to decide who lives and dies. No one is going to stop me and I don't care who I hurt or kill. Its all about him, power, control, dominance over others at any price.
The mom just said, no.
In the end he was crying like a baby because of his actions. He wanted help. He wanted help from the people he was just threatening to kill. Funny how he did not care if anyone else lived or died, but again, it was all about him and what he wanted.
It being black on white is not the point, it being male on female and children is not the point. The point is that when one person feels that they can threaten the life of another, they need to be stopped. Having a gun allows you to stop innocent people from being killed when no police are around to do that for you. Most of every day we are on our own. The police are not personal body guards. They do not protect you on every street corner. They provide enforcement where they are, and respond the best that they can to save as many as they can. A trained citizen with a firearm is an extension of law enforcement in much the same way private security is an extension of law enforcement. They both just play different roles providing similar protections.
Civil gun owners are not looking to attack people. They are looking to defend people. This mom did just that, and our constitution gives us this right to protect ourselves and others in this very specific way.
Although he may have gotten away with this incident if this mom were not there, this bad guy will now never stick another gun in anyone's face ever again. This crime problem solved.
