The way I understood it was that everything on the island happened.  It needed to happen because the "light" needed to be protected. Otherwise there's no more after-life.  The whole flash-sideways was just to show us how they all were reunited in the after-life.  They just showed things out of sequence.  Which they certainly have been known to do...lol.

I compare it to the epilogue of Titanic when all the passengers met up on the ship in the after-life.  Except that Lost's epilogue was spread out over an entire season.
