Although I'm leaning toward sideways being Jack's period of atonement. The ending is based upon Jack's father's funeral and the ending on the island is based upon Jack's sacrifice and subsequent death. Shannon/Sayid would fit this model as Jack never had a real understanding of Sayid/Nadia.
