Smoke Monster

I dont remember the exact quotes but

Mother tells Jacob and Samuel (MIB) that she is there to protect the light, and that the light will let man understand existence but man cannot handle all the information so once man gets a taste of the light he will be enlightened but never filled and constantly crave more.

The "light" seems to have some kind of electromagnetic radiation attached to it (and the corpses inside are people of all time who have traveled slowly to the light and died of the radiation)

When Jacob gets mad at Samuel he throws him into the light cavern (traveling high speed and not enough time for the radiation to kill him).

Samuel becomes enlightened and starts understanding existence (and that his body is a temporary thing). He ditches his body since he can always come back to it, take the image of a dead person or become the smoke monster (at will).

Since Jacob is now the guardian of the light, things affected by the light are under his control/rules (the light is the source of fresh water for the island so the island is under Jacobs rules ...MIB became enlightened by the light and is now under Jacob's rules [cannot leave the island])

That is how the guardianship is passed to the next person, "I make a rule that who ever drinks this particular cup of water will now be the guardian and in charge of making the rules"

Thats why MIB wants to kill Jacob, because as long as Jacob is alive his rules apply and there is no way that MIB can leave the island. Once Jacob is dead MIB must kill the candidates (before one of them takes over and makes new rules)

MIB is addicted to leaving the island because he had a taste of enlightenment but could not understand it fully and now he must seek out the other places on the planet to get more enlightenment (like the healing area in Austrailia).
