Gary Sinise founded the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 1974 with John Malkovich. Sinise directed and starred in many of their most successful productions. In 1984, Sinise and Malkovich received critical acclaim for their rendition of Sam Shepard's True West on Broadway. This success led to several smash hits on Broadway for Sinise including revivals of The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men.
Despite almost 20 years of hard labor and fantastic reviews, Sinise's breakthough into the mainstream didn't occur until 1994. That was the year he appeared in Forrest Gump, one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, as well as the smash hit miniseries, The Stand. Since his crossover success, Sinise has starred in Apollo 13, The Green Mile, and Bruno.
