Born in New York but raised in Evanston, IL, Piven had a big acting influence early on in life. Piven made his debut in the 1986 film One Crazy Summer. Other film credits include Miami Rhapsody, Kiss the Girls and Singles. In 1994, he starred in PCU and began a stint as Spence Kovak on the TV series Ellen. In 1997, Piven appeared with his childhood friend John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank and got the lead role in the TV series Cupid.
