Michael Felgate (Hugh Grant) is an Englishman who runs a struggling auction house in New York. After three months of dating his beautiful girlfriend Gina Vitale (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Michael gathers up his courage and pops the question. Gina bursts into tears and declares that even though she loves him, she can never marry him.
When Gina's father, the rather well-connected Frank, welcomes his potential son-in-law with open arms, Michael begins to suspect that by marrying Gina, he may not just become a member of her family, but a member of The Family.
This, Michael finds, is Gina's biggest fear. In order to win the hand of the woman he loves, Michael embarks on a mission to thwart the mob. Soon, however, thanks to Gina's charming father Frank, Michael Felgate is inadvertently laundering money for the mafia through his auction house, is an accessory to murder, and has become known in certain New York circles as a tough wiseguy from Kansas City: The notorious Mickey Blue Eyes.
