HSX Average, Front Page Chart, what caused the crash?

On the front page the hsx average nosedived on 8-19 from 1559 down to 1504, then back to 1587. Down 3.5 percent one day then up 5.5 percent the next

First question is what is this average of?

second question what caused the huge drop then even bigger rally up.
