Excuse the long-windedness, and I certainly don't mean to sound like I'm lecturing, because what I don't know certainly far outweighs what I know at this point. This is just basically a description of what I've found to be pretty profitable so far.

To be honest, I think the main secret to my success thusfar has been that I'm fortunate enough to have relatively consistent internet access, so I'm able to check the site fairly often and get on the right side of big news movers.

As for stocks, I've found that investing very short term is pretty wise, at least at my level. Like I said, I try to get on the right side of news stories, but at the end of the day before bed I look at when the news story broke, how big of a story it was, and how much the stock moved and try to determine whether it'll continue to go up significantly the next day or if I think it's topped out/closed to topped out based on that story. Unless I'm fairly confident it's going to go up significantly again, I usually sell it off. There are certainly times that I'm wrong, but I've found that I save more money (in not holding on to stocks that drop significantly the day after rising significantly) than I lose (in not holding onto stocks that go up the next day.) I've noticed that quite often even if they do go up again the next day, they'll go up far less (like $1 or $2), so I'm out 200K, but more often they might go down $4 or $5, especially if the market overreacted to a news story.

I don't play Starbonds more than about a week or two out unless it's going to be a huge gain and it's cheap. For instance, (I'm not sure how much exactly I'm allowed to say about my trades), but there was a very cheap Starbond that adjusted way way up based on a surprise summer blockbuster. I got in on that one early because the return was so great and the investment was small. Usually when it comes to Starbonds, though, I'll check the ones that are adjusting in a week (or occasionally 2 weeks depeding on price) that are still good deals and play those.

When it comes to openers (both stocks and derivatives), I think I've probably been more conservative than I should be. The ones I've played I've won pretty big on, but there have been some missed opportunities there. In general, I try to play conservatively, but when I have very good reason to think something is about to move/about to move more (based on news or whatever), I get very aggressive on it.

Overall, I think I've tried not to be too greedy. I take what I can get and get out. I learned a lot of that from the whole LONER thing. I tried to get on the right side of that way too many times and lost a fortune in commissions getting in and out on either side. When all was said and done, despite huge swings and the commissions thing, I think I ended up about even on it. If I had just gotten on the first downswing and when it started going up again, got out, it would have been more profitable and efficient for me.

The two tips I've seen mentioned in tip posts that I picked up pretty intuitively (sometimes before even seeing them in those posts) that I think are pretty critical are understanding that making less money quickly that can be re-invested is usually a better use of money than making more long term on that same amount of money. Also, I'm not quite sure how common this is (as it just seems like common sense to me to avoid it), but a lot of the tips things mention, basically, not to get sentimental about stocks and buy stuff you want to see and not buy stuff you don't want to see. In a game like this, that kind of behavior is totally illogical, as it's really all about what's good value and what's bad value. I have no issue shorting movies I'd really like to see or longing movies that I'd never see if that's the thing to do. One token share of NPORT is the extent of my sentimentality, haha.Ā

Having a trained monkey around to trade when you area unavailable is a huge benefit. {nm} BionicMoron Sep 30, 07:14

Well, I've found that having any kind of monkey around to do anything whether you're available or not is a huge benefit in life. {nm} Ruthian23 Sep 30, 07:16

I get the joke. But, some might interpret that as automated trading in Port Monkey, which it is not. {nm} edzep Sep 30, 07:18

Yes, twas a joke. I did not mean to imply anything nefarious was going on. {nm} BionicMoron Sep 30, 07:29
