Maybe it's a good thing...
PIRA2 was delayed until 2012 because the horror genre is just dying this year. The highest-grossing film is Insidious and it only made $54M while Scream 4, a film some expected to be a big hit, barely made $38M total. The Thing looks to follow suit, leaving theatres with less than 30M total.
Other recent genre failures include:
Dream House, Shark Night 3D, Fright Night, Priest, Final Destination 5 (lowest grossing in series), The Rite, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, the list goes on.
Hopefully, Moviesnob or others can offer some reason for fans of the genre to be optimistic when one film fails after another. Sure, Paranormal Activity 3 will be a hit but it still will be the only one the genre has had arguably since part 2 opened a year ago and that's not enough.
