There's a great moment in "The Tin Drum" when a labourer who pored concrete for some of the Nazi defenses along the Normandy coast reveals to... the protagonist, Oskar, I think... that he has written the words "barbaric, mystical, bored" in a hidden spot in the wet concrete. Oskar (or someone else) says, "You have given our century its name."
