I read that both Die Hards 1 and 2 were both not originally designed to be Die Hard films as well.
Die Hard 1 was originally meant to be a film based on a novel named Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp, and was at one point gonna star Arnold Schwarzenegger and make it a Commando sequel.
Die Hard 2 was based off of a novel by a different author, 58 Minutes by Walter Wager. Although, I'm not sure if the original script to that was meant to be an adaptation of the novel or it was originally adapted as a Die Hard sequel.
Die Hard 5 is the only one originally written to be a Die Hard film, I believe.
