SPWA has nothing to do with "Brooklyn's Finest ". And SPWAG isn't homevideo-only , but it is a homevideo-driven division .
Even the indie sellers regarded SPWAG as one of super-ancillaries (along with Anchor Bay, Magnolia and IFC).

More history about SPWAG:
Originally, SPWAG was a department of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. In 2007, Sony made SPWAG to became a stand-alone division.
Still, the main market of SPWAG is home video market. Most of SPWAG films went straight-to-video, including almost all films of Stage 6 (which is actually a division of SPWAG); only very few SPWAG films received US theatrical releases. (In 2007, SPWAG said that it planned to buy 100 films per year; but after economic downturn, SPWAG is only buying over half of what they used to)
Whenever SPWAG want to release a film theatrically, it would offer the film to Sony's distribution divisions; if all of Sony's distribution divisions pass on the film, SPWAG would release the film through a non-Sony distributor. (ie. After both Sony Pictures Classics and Screen Gems passed on "Black Dynamite", SPWAG released that film through Apparition. )
In fact, SPWAG's current president (Steven Bersch) was formerly the president of Fox Home Entertainment; I guess it explained all.
But I should note that few of SPWAG films did receive wide releases. (ie. SPWAG bought "Legion", and then Screen Gems agreed to release that film.)
By the way, SPWAG didn't team with Senator to buy "Brooklyn's Finest"; but Senator had homevideo output deal with SPWAG. When Senator's deal with "Brooklyn's Finest" fallen apart, SPWAG was no longer having the rights to release "Brooklyn's Finest" on video.
