Some of those should be left alone...

Posted by: TwoMisfits (a.k.a del_SCA_TwoMisfits) on Aug 14, 11:34 in response to lobogotti's post so Sunday afternoon is probably not the best time to chat...

Jungle Book is not a film for a sequel - it will fail like Alice and Huntsman...

Mike and Dave did not make money, so it should not get a sequel...

Now You See Me 2 is an international success but a US flop - like Ice Age, this film is not gonna work for another sequel in the US...

Barbershop and Ride Along did not make money with their sequels (they maybe broke even), so they should never get another one...

If Affleck wasn't so in charge of the Batman movie, that should never get a sequel based on the DC universe properties, which have also not made money...but Affleck delivers, so I'll give you this one...

And, no one said that movie companies should not make a FEW sequels - most of us have said they make TOO MANY sequels (and remakes)...it's about balance and the studios have gotten way out of balance, not to their or the audience's benefit...if you are taking more than 1/2 - 2/3 of your studio production budget to make sequels, you're probably spending too much...So, I helped narrow your list - the studios should do the same - be harsher judges of what will work for sequels AND why...if you don't have a good idea to make a sequel, don't make it, even if you had a great initial movie...I'm not sure Sausage Party has somewhere to go with a sequel - if they don't, they shouldn't make it...

I mean, let's think about why July was so great...It had 3 original hits with the enormous legs of an animated sequel and the big initial weekends of 4 sequel/remake brands (all four of which will lose money or barely break even - Tarzan, Ghost, Bourne, and Trek)...a ton of production money was dumped in July and the only movies to "make money" (other than Purge - the exception) were the non-sequel/non-remake properties (Pets, Bad Moms, and Lights Out)...and they made a lot...

so Sunday afternoon is probably not the best time to chat about this, but wanted to point out... lobogotti Aug 14, 11:06

Some of those should be left alone... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:34

Methinks the lobo/moviesnob studio would be in business a lot longer than the misfits studio. Moviesnob Aug 14, 11:44

Nah - Suicide Squad cost $325M (if you believe it was only $175M to produce)... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:49

And Batman v Superman cost $400M (with advertising costs included) TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:54

if you include all costs, its more, but it'll have total revenue (after splits) of over a billion {nm} Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:11

Bad Moms, as much as it's profitable, it wasn't as strong a comedy as many expected or hoped. Trying to make a sequel would be foolish. diamondman56 Aug 14, 11:55

That's my point above - some successful movies have nowhere to go as sequels... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 11:58

Yep... We need a good plan, Stan :-) {nm} jmt-nl Aug 14, 12:03

They don't have to be successful, they just have to be successful enough. eg Neighbors 2, Hangover 3, Night at the Museum 3, Anchorman 2,etc {nm} RogerMore Aug 14, 12:05

+1 {nm} chosenone2oo5 Aug 14, 12:14

will be interesting to see what STX does with that profit. {nm} lobogotti Aug 14, 15:23

Pay back what they lost on hardcore Henry, free state of jones, and whatever that Julia Roberts thing was {nm} djgrimlok Aug 15, 00:09

Follow my studio strategy, it seems:)...wonder if they stay in business:)... TwoMisfits Aug 15, 10:19

Suicide Squad did not cost $325m. You're making that number up. Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:07

Wish I was, but I think Wikipedia is probably right... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:26

then its total costs are actually higher (theres a lot more to life than theatrical). It read as if you were talking about its budget {nm} Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:37

I don't make stuff up, Moviesnob...but you seem to be taking my movie comments more personally TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:33

you are making stuff up. It takes more than 1-2 hits to be successful. More than 50% of your slate is a better gauge. Moviesnob Aug 14, 12:46

1-2 was a euphemism - I'd actually have to crunch numbers to give a "real number" TwoMisfits Aug 14, 12:55

And I guess if you count the kid summer movies, I've done Shaun the Sheep and Boxtrolls TwoMisfits Aug 14, 13:04

PS - Do you ever tout your original released films on here...if not, you should (especially if you have a "favorite" one)... {nm} TwoMisfits Aug 14, 13:08

;) {nm} lobogotti Aug 14, 15:21

took the gals out for lunch and missed a lot! lobogotti Aug 14, 15:21

Let's see - what I would cut... TwoMisfits Aug 14, 17:38

2017 cuts TwoMisfits Aug 14, 17:47

good stuff. I'm trying to think of a game we could do for this topic. kind of like, be the studio to greenlight and scrap films. {nm} lobogotti Aug 15, 10:54

I like Seth R, and his movies work for what they are...great producer. I keep saying it, this guy does deliver!...and in an ok way. {nm} Malachi Aug 14, 20:53
