America has faced successive waves of intolerance and ignorance before, often related to religion, immigration, or skin color -- Irish, Jews, blacks, gays, eastern Europeans, Asians, Catholics, women, Italians, Hispanics, Muslims, and others -- but the goobers don't win over the medium to long term. This latest batch of bigots seems nothing special, its reliance on the charms, insights, integrity, and teeny-tiny fingers of Donald J. Trump notwithstanding.
America gets better, because its liberal-libertarian alliance effects progress toward reason, tolerance, science, education, and modernity (and against backwardness, superstition, intolerance, and ignorance). America's betters have been shoving progress down the throats of its disaffected lessers for generations. This seems destined to continue as America improves.
