Elvis (B+ for bat**** bonkers Baz); RRR (even more bonkers than Elvis. i don't know how to grade it. CGI is turrible but you're not really
watching it for state of the art effects. was each R a separate 1 hour movie cause it felt cobbled together from three different installments -- it's *long* and dense both on the level of sheer movie tropes it's cribbing (Gandhi meets Jungle Book meets Heat meets The Raid meets Titanic meets . . . dizzying) and the history of India-British colonialism. there's a lot of **** going on! but it's got an energy, at least in spurts)
the framing device for Elvis, which it mostly abandons in the much better second Vegas half, felt weirdly unneeded -- if anyone even knows who Col. Parker was, there's no serious dispute that he was a conman and grifter who cheated Elvis out of a mountain of money. but Baz posits it as some mystery to be solved when there's no real mystery about it. the Vegas numbers though . . . off the ****ing chain. Austin Butler does transform especially in those scenes. but maybe like Elvis himself, who was just straight up a weird dude on and off stage, the melodrama with Parker and his family when the curtain falls just isn't as compelling as watching Elvis perform. so . . . maybe truer to life than Baz would have wanted to admit? well worth the 2.5 hrs though. Baz is back baby!
