you don't know if the other screens are being rented out but exhibition has not recovered from the pandemic yet
and it may never recover. the chains do regret going as big as they did with the multiplex screens. it gave them a lot of flexibility but now they have mostly empty seats during the week. thats why you see a lot of other things going on to fill those screens during the week and slow weekends.
But that doesnt change why some movies move to a split schedule. I would think GODZILLA is probably worth some evening shows but all theaters are different and maybe that theater was only getting the family crowd with it. The problem with giving a film with low demand a full schedule is you have to give that movie 4 shows a day every day so it is usually better to have empty shows that committ to a full schedule if you have something bigger to play.
But I never had to book 18 screens either!
And no, they dont pay for each screening, just film rental from the entire gross and the projection is almost entirely automated.
