The reason for it is in the announcement (reviews change over time)

The main issue for bigger films is what is the threshold for big titles that premiere at fests? This suggests the box office designation supercedes the festival premiere designation

WB must be suppressing the BEET2 RT because MARIA is 70% with 23 reviews Antibody Aug 30, 10:28

Apparently Rottentomatoes holding back reveals for all expected blockbusters now, was update buried in that Popcornmeter news nfred659 Aug 30, 11:47

so RT expects BEET2 to gross more than $120M it's already more than 20 reviews {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 11:53

Oh, it's total not opening. {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 12:01

It wasnt buried. They even have charts! 40 reviews for BEET2 and 20 reviews for MARIS to hit their threshold. {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 11:54

Buried in the sense no one noticed it until now {nm} nfred659 Aug 30, 12:02

Thats not on them! {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:07

It kinda is. Wasn't implied by the headline, URL or any of the trade pieces reporting on it. {nm} nfred659 Aug 30, 12:08

They emailed and spoke to PR teams and distributors about the change {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:10

The press release was about the New Popcornmeter, rather than changes to Tomatometer. {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 12:11

agree to disagree about them burying this {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:13

Would've expected some social media clarification at least when Beetlejuice reviews started coming out. nfred659 Aug 30, 12:15

+1 this {nm} RamsFan2004 Aug 30, 12:50

You think MARIA is making $60-120M on Netflix? ;) {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 12:02

Netflix is considered a wide release regardless of box office, but its likely they are putting it in the festival bucket so only 10 reviews Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:06

Studios could easily get RT to delay the RT score by holding back until reviews. WB owns 25% of RT, Universal the other 75%. {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 12:06

Maybe there are already more than 40 reviews sent to RT, but they're waiting and hoping for 80%+ {nm} Antibody Aug 30, 12:15

if you send a review to RT because they missed it, it usually takes 2 or 3 days for them to post it {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:19

I know the studios own RT, but are they gaming the system to this extent (rigging it in a sense) to get a high % out of the gate? {nm} RamsFan2004 Aug 30, 12:53

^ by 'rig' I only mean in the sense that they are competing against other smaller movies that don't have the pull they do. {nm} RamsFan2004 Aug 30, 12:55

I would argue that the collapse of film journalism and the rise of user reviews are the culprits Moviesnob Aug 30, 13:03

There are much easier ways that every distributor does to game the rt score. This doesn't guarantee a high score {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:57

What's the logic behind this? Wouldn't blockbusters be less reliant on reviews anyway? Wouldn't smaller movies benefit more from a delay? {nm} RamsFan2004 Aug 30, 12:04

Bigger movies tend to get a lot more reviews and the tomatometer tends to change much more dramatically nfred659 Aug 30, 12:06

It does hurt small movies. Its hard to get critics to watch smaller movies fests so 10 is a high threshold for sure {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 12:08

Makes sense. I see now why big movies don't want big swings if reviews could be mixed. But small movies need that tomato icon right away. {nm} RamsFan2004 Aug 30, 12:51

You mostly need RT for around the release time. RT isnt really consumer facing until then {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 13:04

I've relied a lot more on Letterboxd in 2024 for initial word of mouth {nm} Moviesnob Aug 30, 13:05

I'm back on Letterboxd after five years for that very reason. Just a lot more reliable than RT. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Aug 31, 03:57
