Watching ROPE now on German Televison '-Deutsche sprache' yuk, but more brilliant and fascinating than how I remembered it.
Hitchcock and James Stewart on top of their form.
For who doesn't know the film; two brilliant homo-sexual students have killed a friend just for the fun of it and to make it more difficult and prove their superiority even more, they put the body in a big wooden chest in their apartment and invite the victims parents, girlfriend, professor and so on for a dinnerparty with the drinks served on the hidden victims body.
Also.... not unimportant..; this was all done in one cameramovement... the film is a one taker !
(The sun goes down during the film, seen through the big windows... also take note of the clouds... they were moved by stage-hands... no backscreen projection or other technological solution !)
The only reason why Hitchcock had to cut away ( in creative ways - watch for them ) every 20 /25 minutes was that the roll of film in the camera had to be changed.
