I freaking LOVED it!
It's too soon for me to have detailed convos with friends about it after just one ep so I'm doing it here.
The absolute standout for me was the soundtrack/score and how it was used perfectly with the visual images. Pretty much all of my favorite movies and shows take their sound integration seriously and highlight (Tarantino films, The Godfather, Kubrick films are all great examples). Throwing Soundgarden and the Rolling stones in there was amazing. The Paint it Black scene was probably my favorite of the whole episode. I thought it was "Red Wedding" level awesome. I don't think it was an accident that they earlier included the line about implementing modern quotes into the bot's dialog in spite of it being anachronistic. Heck, that is exactly what the sound editors where doing after all.
I remember the movie from when I was a kid. I think that a lot of people in my generation (born mid-70s) where similarly affected by that movie. Many saw it very young (it was PG and played on TV occasionally) but with real dark adult themes that we couldn't quite understand at that age which naturally draws interest in kids. I never forgot that movie even though I haven't seen it since I was 10. I'll bet there are a lot of people out there in my age group that were just as stoked as I was when this show was announced.
My favorite semi-subtle bit was the fly imagery. Several times you see a fly and at the end Delores swats one which was a wonderful callback to the doctor's "They literally can't hurt a fly" line. Really good stuff and a cool way to forecast what we all know is coming...mass robot revolt most likely.
My early guess is that we could eventually discover that nearly everybody is a robot. My bet is that the only "people" that are actually people will be the guests (but probably not all of them) and Anthony Hopkins. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Hopkins is the only non-robot in the whole show and that he lives alone in the park.
I read somewhere that HBO is hoping for a 5-season cycle. With HBO, cost could become an issue if the show doesn't breakout huge like GoT. Past exaples of them cutting great shows short due to cost include Deadwood and Rome. BUT, if they do go through 5 seasons I think they could be similar to how The Wire played out with perhaps a different "world" for each season with some overlap between casts and storylines. I get the feeling that the it would be difficult to spread out the watershed moment from the movie for much more than 10 eps.
I sure hope they keep up the high quality because I'll be looking forward to this one every week!
