One of the great achievements of America's liberal-libertarian mainstream during my lifetime is that bigots no longer want to be known as
bigots, at least not in public.
During my childhood, the intolerance was common, and casual, and open. Blacks, gays, women, and others were mistreated openly, often by government, and the bigots wanted everyone to know how the disfavored were to be put in their place.
Today's bigots are more guarded -- they talk about "traditional values," cloak their bigotry in superstition, and claim to be "color-blind." They open up in militia meetings, with friends, or at Republican committee meetings, but in public they avoid overt racism, misogyny, gay-bashing, etc.
But they're still bigots, often consequent to personal failures, deficient character, poor education, superstition, and backwardness. Decent people should speak against the intolerance, identify the bigots, and try to limit the harm caused by bigots and their backwardness.
