*makes hand-wavy motion* The UK government has triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty. which says that if a member state notifies the EU
that it wishes to leave, the EU and that state will negotiate a withdrawal agreement, and the state will leave the EU when the withdrawal agreement enters into force, or failing that, two years after the Article 50 notification was made. The UK invoked Article 50 in March 2017.
There is a proviso - this period can be extended by unanimous agreement of the European Council, but... well, let's say unanimous from 27 member states is hard. Poland, Hungary, Italy... any one of these countries could object (and the UK would probably have to pay a price to secure their agreement)
My money is still on a fudge that will keep the UK in the EU (and has been since the referendum), but something big will have to change for Brexit not to go through.

The treaty doesn't cover whether a country could rescind its Article 50 notice, and it hasn't been legally tested yet Jul 09, 11:27
