I would guess that they knew where they wanted the characters to end up, but got bored with the deliberate pacing.

That seems to be a common problem for storytellers who write to follow where the story takes them. Once they've figured out the ending, it's no longer as fun a journey to find out where the characters are going. At that point, it's no longer the thrill of painting on a blank canvas, it's the boredom of paint by numbers with the picture already there. So you speed up and take shortcuts just to finish it.
