Frances McDormand landed her first big break in the 1984 Coen Brothers film, Blood Simple, beginning a collaboration that would eventually result in her marriage to Joel Coen. Although McDormand received critical acclaim for her work, her next noteworthy role came along three years later in the 1987 Coen Brothers film, Raising Arizona. Aside from a role in 1988's Mississippi Burning, which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, McDormand's career remained somewhat lukewarm through the late 80's and early 90's. In 1996, however, McDormand starred in Fargo, taking home an Oscar for her dead-on performance as the pregnant town sheriff, Marge Gunderson.
