Steven Soderbergh broke out onto the Hollywood scene with his controversial first film, sex, lies, and videotape. The movie was hailed as a triumph for independent moviemaking and swept the Cannes Film Festival in 1989. Soderbergh followed the film with several small, independent films such as Kafka, King of the Hill, and Gray's Anatomy. In 1998, Soderbergh took a turn for the mainstream with the film Out of Sight.. In 2000, Soderbergh directed his first major box-office smash with the movie Erin Brockovich.
