The classic showbiz drama Sweet Smell of Success is coming back with an updated gloss of power, greed and passion. John Cusack is negotiating to star and serve as executive producer for the movie that featured Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis in the 1957, original version. That movie was written by Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets and directed by Alexander Mackendrick. Cusack will portray Sidney Falco, who - in the original - was a sleazy press agent (Tony Curtis) who idolized J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster), the most powerful newspaper gossip columnist in New York City. Hellbent on stopping his sister from marrying a jazz musician, Hunsecker privately hires Falco to break up the affair by any means necessary.
SFX Theatricals is bringing a musical version of Sweet Smell of Success to the stage with composer Marvin Hamlisch, lyricist Craig Carnelia, book writer John Guare and director Nicholas Hytner.
