Every symbol has a unique ID associated with it. But it's more like each item, because the ID will stay the same even if the symbol changes. If you search the html of each page you can find it. The html will also lead you to a page link that will give you the symbol based on the ID. Then, you can input any number in that link and get back the cooresponding symbol, some of which don't even show up in an advanced search. Finally, you write a script to cycle through every #, pull out the symbol, use that to pull the page, etc, etc. There are currently ~21700 symbols, and the ID #s go up to ~36800.
That's the most I've ever described about how I get a lot of my data, including future IPOs.
ID #1 is 20BIL, making it technically the oldest thing on HSX.
