Yep. If you hadn't read the book you were sunk to some degree. I started the first book, ended up scanning it so I was okay there.
I didn't make it through every bit of the first book, as it just did not hit me enough to keep going like I would with books that really grab me. I had the second book ready to go, but by the time I'd finished the first I was done. I think I picked the second book up one time, read a few pages, and set it aside, and that was it.
But: having read enough of the first one i was okay; otherwise, this movie could be a head scratcher to a certain extent, as they did a lousy job with certain details.
