Oh I understand that much, and as a guy I can get emotionally invested too and like details in my story, but...

Posted by: LanceStorm22 on Jun 17, 21:12 in response to accountant_4_Jesus' post You might not understand how women work.

Why stuff like this and Twilight?  Poorly written stories with bland, homely leads that would never be in these situations.  There's no way that Bella Swan or Ana?, from what I've read synopses of, would find themselves in these situations, they offer little to nothing for their supposed romantic counter parts.  Bella's described as homely, and I'm not shallow and saying beauty's everything, it's not, but if you're going to go that route you have to give me something in her character that proves to me why a guy, especially a 100 year old vampire and a werewolf, would pursue her.  She's not interesting in the least, she only talks about being turned into a vampire, and she always just seems to be devoid of any personality, choosing to remain sullen throughout, and she's codependent to the point of attempting suicide, this behavior screams stay away.

Ana is a Bella clone, only this time it's about getting into bondage.  Once again, what does she offer, she's some unintiated college student, he's supposedly some bondage master billionaire, this doesn't mesh.

I get these characters are pretty much ciphers for women to project themselves onto, but seriously, women think so little of themselves that they would choose these characters?

Secondly there's the nature of these relationships.  These women are pretty much psychologically/physically/verbally abused by these guys.  Edward straight up stalks Bella and tampers with things in order to "protect" her.  Jacob is like some violent, creepy stalker himself.  and Grey falls into the same category and wants to make the girl his slave.  I simply don't get it.

If you want wish fulfillment, I don't know why you wouldn't choose something else or simply use your imagination, all too often it goes to waste these days.

DL: Producer Nina Jacobson Denies Variety's 50 Shades Of (Censored) accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 16:20

The funniest comment on that story is someone saying this tripe will make 150M opening weekend {nm} LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 17:25

It'll do a lot. Sex and the City 1 did $60m on its opening weekend..this would top that. I'd say $80 is the low end. {nm} MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 18:01

But Sex and the City didn't involve a sexual fetish some would describe as extreme. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 18:03

That isn't stopping it from being successful.. it's helping make it successful. Wouldn't negatively affect the BO at all. {nm} MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 18:04

Yes it would, because to accurately portray that fetish, the movie would have to be rated NC-17, which would severely limit its potential accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 18:06

There's no way they would release it as an NC-17 film. They'll do whatever is necessary to make it R obviously. {nm} MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 18:08

That's true, but that may mean removing some scenes that the people who have read the books would see as the "better scenes", if accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 18:12

Hunger Games dialed back on the kid-on-kid violence from the book substantially to no ill box office effect {nm} mickpix Jun 17, 18:16

you have read 50 Shades Of Gray? {nm} RazorHawk Jun 17, 18:19

No I haven't, and I don't intend to. But having read other books that have been translated into film, I can say with absolute certainty accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 18:24

Game of Thrones is toned down significantly from its book counterpart, the show is booming. An R-rated version of this will be fine. MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 18:19

Game of Thrones would probably be NC-17 or close to it in theaters, there's no way it'd pass with just an R-Rating {nm} LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 18:22

Braveheart got an R rating, how is Game of Thrones any different from that? {nm} stevie1der328 Jun 17, 18:25

I can't rightly remember all of Braveheart, but I'm going off of rampant full frontal nudity and some bits of violence here and there that's LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 18:34

IMHO GOT is better than any movie out this year. GRRM was smart to let HBO have it insteadof letting Hollywood and the censors screw it up. Pandorawc Jun 17, 20:13

GOT definitely is extremely good. I know it would probably never happen, but I wish HBO could get the rights to Harry Potter.. LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 21:15

It is by far the hottest property that could be licensed right about now. MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 18:03

it takes three books for the girl to learn about bondage? {nm} RazorHawk Jun 17, 18:16

That's what I don't understand, how is this worthy of the nearly 400 pages of one book, let alone nearly 1600 over the course of 3? {nm} LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 19:51

You might not understand how women work. accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 20:08

based on your IM, i'm certain that you don't {nm} mickpix Jun 17, 20:27

I didn't go into as much depth as I thought I could have. Maybe I should have, so that you wouldn't misunderstand what I was trying to say. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 21:11

So what MontyBurnz Jun 17, 20:29

No, that's not what I'm saying. accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 21:23

Oh I understand that much, and as a guy I can get emotionally invested too and like details in my story, but... LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 21:12

There is no way it cracks more than 100M, and that's pushing it a lot, there have only been 4 R-rated movies top 60M, and SatC didn't quite LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 18:32

It's also worth considering that some people may not want to be seen at the movie theatre when this comes out because they don't want their accountant_4_Jesus Jun 17, 18:50

Women reading this book are not exactly hiding it from their friends at this point. It's a badge of honor. {nm} MiyazakiFan Jun 17, 19:13

That's what I was kind of getting at, haha, and I'd say there are probably a good percentage of the readers probably are not saying so... LanceStorm22 Jun 17, 19:43

On the other hand, people may go to the movie to meet others of the same mind. Much like Trekkies go to ST Movies to met Trekkies. {nm} elchan Jun 17, 20:09

Secretary -Domestic Total Gross: $4,059,680. I can guarantee it will at least make that much, even though we don't know the actors. {nm} arf Jun 17, 21:54
