Hugo B-, Midnight in Paris B, The Woman in Black B, Young Adult A, Arriety A+
Hugo - The Melies-segments were great ! And the story was nice enough... Even Sacha Borat did a good job. But the interaction ( inter-acting ... or better still: inter NONacting... jeez almost every scene with that boy and girl feels awkward )
Midnight in Paris - Entertaining enough. And for its flimsy concept... great storytelling by Woody Allen. I especially liked how the timetraveling automobile was never explained. Great McGuffin.
Woman In Black - It is too stagey. ( I guess you all know it has its origin in a stageplay ) and that is probably why this film didn't really catch on... but the translation of all those stage-gimmicks ( the wind-up dolls... the rocking chair, the lightning effects, the tearing off of wallpaper, etc ) were exactly the things that made it fun for me. I love films that are true to their stage-origins ( hello '12 angry men' and 'sleuth")
Young Adult - great little 'human' film... great performance by miss Theron.
Arrietty - yes, it's the borrowers. But better than that John Goodman starrer. And Studio Giblis' way of animating nature ( bugs, birds, plants, grass, rain ) allways brings that extra special poetry to their storytelling.
