Lots of scenes in Wright's Anna Karenina are choreographed as if they were dance scenes... even scenes in mundane settings such as a clerk's office. They truly look like musical scenes, but the characters don't sing. (The choreography is by a Belgian choreographer, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and is wonderful - he is one of the most gifted people in the dance world of the past decade, winning awards all over the world).

Moreover, the whole concept of the movie is that it is entirely set inside a theatre, with elaborate scene changes that reminded me of the ones you see in Broadway shows. All settings, even the train station, are recreated in that theatre, on and around the stage.

It's hard to explain Laughing But I hope this clarified things for you...

thank you, it clarifies what, but not why :-) {nm} forlorne Oct 22, 09:09

I'm still wondering about the why as well :-) I'll chalk it up to Joe Wright's exaggerated directorial style and mannerisms. {nm} GalacticPothealer Oct 22, 09:58
