Breaking Dawn Part 2 (C+), Ted (B-), Spark of Being (B+) and a bunch of horror classics...
The Searchers (1956, A-) Ford's Texas is Technicolor but John Wayne's motives are dark. This ambiguous epic questions the Western's heroism.
The Fly (1986, A-) Cronenberg's body horror dovetails nicely into the Hollywood genre conventions in this moving fable on faltering health.
Dracula's Daughter (1936, B+) The male characters have to fight for relevance in this oddly moving, female centered take on the vampire myth
Tetsuo (1989, B) Part cyberpunk montage exercise, part fetishist horror movie: this fever dream does it darnest to defy narrative logic.
Spark of Being (2010, B+) Morrison's found footage tour de force uses the Frankenstein myth as subject matter, but also as a modus operandi.
Cat People (1942, B+) This horror noir is fraught with freudianism & makes the case for the domestication of the feral female by matrimony.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923, B-) has charm but buckles under the weight of its lavish setpieces & labyrinthine list of characters.
Freaks (1932, B-) is reduced to an exploitative sideshow by excessive censoring. Narrative logic dissipates, only freaky fragments remain.
Ted (2012, B-): The raunchy antics in this bear & buddy comedy are well paced, but the concluding attempt at redemptive dramedy falls flat.
Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012, C+) All puberal fun is replaced with mock maturity. Lots of handholding leads to a mildly satisfying finale.
