I do not know any specifics but HSX staff can change the volatility of the stocks. DMac posted on the boards that the CX stocks are more sensitive to trades made than the HSX stocks.
But the point you bring up wouldnt be successful.
(here is some crap I have made up to illustrate the current situation):
stock xyz IPOs and 50,000 traders buy it; causing price to go up 10pts and then levels off; release comes and xyz bombs; 30,000 traders flip short causing price to go down 6 pts; 5,000 new traders buy in short; on monday another 7,000 traders flip short causing price to go down another 2 pts and level off. This movie really bombed and was IPOed at the top end of its expected range (IPOed at $42 and opening weekend made $8) Its price after most traders own short is around $44 and its box office is $8 (expected delist of $20) How do we make up that $24 slack since most traders already own it short?
