Awesome holds for "Captain Marvel" all last week and will break 400 million to avoid "Spider Man 3" territory. Which is a good thing, but the film itself isn't as storng as previous Marvel titles (based on reactions), and fans were right to criticize many of the story's decision making. In fact, such honesty should be enouraged more to increase numbers in the future.
That's the good news. The bad news is (yes) I'm pretty bummed about the latest box office overall numbers. We're at 2013 levels, down 17 percent (year to year comparison), and attendance is falling. I guess all other matters just faded form me after hearing that.
Having just endured watching Fox dissapear at the hands of Disney, a very painful thing to watch for me personally. It's not much comfort to see films only break small milestones and overall box office hitting double digit declines.
Can CM beat "Wonder Woman," domestic? Perhaps? But that's not fair comparison to WW since it opened with a 50 million less opening compared to CM. Even the latest articles note CM had to have a late box office rebound to even reach 400 million, which is where my thinking was.
My honest view is CM does show weakness with the polarizing fans. No, I don't think fans who weren't impressed with CM are bigots or (whatever) you call them. I saw this same audience support Wonder Woman and even viewed that film in theaters for multiple showings. You can't have it both ways. I fully respect the fans' opinions both then and now. I refuse to bully any of them from doing so.
After "Endgame" Im predicting DC takes over with a stronger slate of films moving forward (the exception being Black Panther 2, which will be huge). The "Birds of Prety" project alone (for DC) has multiple spin-offs and universe building oppurtunity unlike any super hero project I've seen in years.
Anyway. That hopefully answers all questions.
