Big change in America over 50-75 years: Bigots no longer wish to be known (publicly) as bigots.

When I was young, the bigotry was open, casual, common, sometimes brutal. Women were steered away from graduate schools. A neighbor told a black student to 'find another way home' because he didn't want her passing his house -- and she did. Gays were beaten in alleys -- and that was by the police. Jews were called disgusting names in stores and on sidewalks The KKK conducted recruitment rallies for pre-teens on school ballfields. Women were dragged into homes by the sleeve, or hair, and the response was 'wonder what she did?' The bigots wanted everyone to know who they were, and how they saw things, and that this was how it should and would be.

Thanks to the liberal-libertarian alliance, though, today's bigots are on the defensive, far more guarded. They hide behind terms such as "traditional values," "color-blind," "conservative values," and "faith-based values." They express their genuine opinions on women, blacks, gays, and others solely in contexts in which they feel safe, such as private homes, militia gatherings,and Republican Committee meetings.

They express their anger about this change by railing at their betters about "political correctness." Yet there is no more censorship-shackled, euphemism-loving, dogma-enforcing, speech-code-imposing place in America than a campus controlled by conservatives.
