a (mostly) female audience to sing along to. In that respect, Queen may be too gay and/or theatrical, and Bee Gees to disco and/or too hard to sing along to.
I'd say Beatles must be the frontrunner.
ELO it definitely won't be. I love them, but that's as unlikely as it being Steely Dan, so I'll just suppose Hooray was being his usual playful and/or ironic self.
This will also have to have worldwide appeal, so it can't be some band that basically only Americans dug (like the Osmonds).
So I'll say: The Beatles, or perhaps A-ha (move the cursor one nation west of Sweden).
But only the Beatles will be universally well known enough, and have a sing-along factor, that I can think of. Unless they are also considering solo artist, or unless I am forgetting someone..
