Disney has for decades followed a policy of removing older titles from the market (& done the same once it acquired another production house - the biggest recent eg being 20th Century Fox) for private screenings, movie clubs & esp theatres (single screens in particular) who rerun old movies which are classics/favourites of older folks or seen by cinema related field grad students etc & esp in smaller towns, just so the available options for viewing are limited to their more recent releases which they can hawk for far higher prices whether in theatres/online (on their own platform, they started limiting availbility for TV channels too once that launched but that I guess you could call a predictable business move). These screenings aren't always free (in fact never except some small fests supporting good causes), they get a small fee too which would bring a tiny amount of cash on (near) dead titles but by restricting choice they can force both hall owners & moviegoers into buffetting the numbers for their more recent releases. They're killing cinema heritage, narrowing viewer outlook (& that's before we get to the dumbi-fication via milking fantasy franchises or often underpaying talent that works in the background like writers etc) & these new indie movies they're supporting today will in a few years go the same way.
Just pointing out that they're no saints (just like every other big corp/billionaire) & I'm surprised Indiewire is now at the level of pushing PR pieces, they should've removed the 'indie' part of their name awhile back.
