Audience subversion is a delicate balancing act of giving the audience what they want but not what they expect.
Some filmmakers think they're supposed lean into the "unexpected" aspect of audience subversion more, but they do so too much that they stray too far from what audiences want.
I myself just wanted a movie simply about the coexistence between dinosaurs and man and how the scales were doomed to be unbalanced one way or another. I mean, audience subversion while staying within those confines might have been acceptable, but I for the life of me can't fathom who else could possibly think of a conflict involving engineered locusts. It's like the X-Men movies focusing primarily on humanity's distrust of mutants and then Dark Phoenix decides to bring in aliens as the source of conflict, even if there may be source material precedent.
The only right-minded people behind the scenes of Dominion were the marketing team.
