Just my opinion, but...
It seems critics have a particular rubric/metric they consider or "filter" through which they watch the movie - wheareas the audience doesn't downgrade a movie for being formulaic (for example) if they like it. I see a lot of low critic scores with disproportionately high audience scores on RT; and when that happens, I watch the movie. I generally understand why the critics downgraded the film, but usually enjoy it as much as the audience score (esp if it's in my quadrant).
BL: I side with the audience when a disconnect happens (in either direction). When they are in agreement, it is either a good (or bad) movie as per the rating.
At least that's been my experience.
