So, U.S. films held a nearly 70% share of the market internationally in 2024. Foreign films in the U.S.: about 1%.

Tarriffs on foreign films coming into the U.S. would therefore have an almost negligible impact on foreign producers' bottom line. They could simply not release in America and a vast majority would not see a difference.

American films, on the other hand, would (in this scenario) be heavily impacted. The big movies are making half or more of their profit from foreign distribution. Even a 10-15% drop in foreign ticket receipts would be tough for our producers.

Again, all this tarrif nonsense would have a MUCH more dramatically negative impact on us than on other countries. It's a distraction, folks, meant to have you look over there while we're being screwed in plain sight over here.

DL: Trump proposes a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the US. notfabio May 04, 16:58

Seems to be a runaway production move but implementation, how? {nm} notfabio May 04, 17:00

runaway production? {nm} Moviesnob May 04, 17:54

Seems to be aimed at filming outside the US, but it seems pretty much impossible to implement. {nm} notfabio May 04, 19:29

he doesnt have a plan, he never does. I didnt know what you meant by runaway production. its not filming outside the US thats the issue its Moviesnob May 04, 19:45

So how do the tarriffs work? Does a French movie have to pay 100% of its budget to be shown here? TheWeekendWarrior May 04, 20:11

he doesnt have a plan, he never does {nm} Moviesnob May 04, 20:15

This... the fact that Jon Voigt is in charge of this plan tells me that it will never happen. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior May 04, 23:50

I just checked and Voight's last three movies filmed in Bulgaria so full-on Trump administration hypocrisy. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior May 05, 04:47

Tariffs only work on physical materials. They are an import tax paid by the RECEIVING customer, so the US distributor would have to pay. DTravel May 04, 20:59

you're assuming he knows what how tarrifs work. he doesnt {nm} Moviesnob May 05, 10:19

I know Trump doesn't know, I was answering Weekend Warrior's question. DTravel May 05, 18:04

The rest of the world can retaliate with 100% tariff on films produced in the US. nm Antibody May 04, 20:57

This. US films foreign earnings are ~50-100X (or more) of foreign films' US earnings. If only more people stand up to the bully. Tallwonder May 04, 22:34

Exactly; just like we've seen with other tariffs. There are levels of stupid. This is a very high level of stupid. {nm} goodvibe61 May 04, 23:32

There is very little foreign production in the US {nm} Moviesnob May 05, 10:20

on Amercan films produced in the US. nm Antibody May 05, 11:46

they want american production compoanies to make movies in their countries thats why they pay a ton for it Moviesnob May 05, 14:26

outside China I should say (where budgets do rival American productions). But even in India, their blockbusters cost $100m at the high end {nm} Moviesnob May 05, 14:29

I guess MPA will sue to cancel the tariff Peterlee May 04, 21:17

Seems like the US would lose box office foreign markets due to reciprocal tariffs. {nm} tatoufan May 05, 04:19

If we follow how tarifs work, it would simply mean Americans would pay 100% more to see a "foreign" movie vs an american movie. lukasck May 05, 05:30

So, U.S. films held a nearly 70% share of the market internationally in 2024. Foreign films in the U.S.: about 1%. Decoman May 05, 06:25

MISS8, AVNG5... would get 100% tariff because they were produced in the UK. nm Antibody May 05, 07:16

But what is the tarriff, the production budget for the movie, essentially doubling it? And that's what? To be released in the United States? TheWeekendWarrior May 05, 07:20

Yeah, I forgot about domestic movies produced at foreign locations. How would that work, I wonder? Decoman May 05, 07:24

Believe this is primarily what he is targeting, bringing more production into the U.S. and draining it from established centres like Canada {nm} Noah66 May 05, 08:09

It's a ploy to being more production and work back to the US. Like almost all of these tariffs they actually won't be implemented {nm} JayPrimetown May 05, 09:56

its cheaper to do it with soft money from governments. The GOP is eliminating the already existing infrastructure in the US (see Louisiana) Moviesnob May 05, 10:18
