Don't worry about each and every adaptation. It's always been hit and miss, and I suppose it always will be. Some of them are really good entertainments.
I feel like I've lived my life with King at my side. To give you an idea: The first King book I bought NEW in the book shop: The Shining. So yeah; I go way back. And I was completely hooked. So then I quickly went back and read both Salem's Lot and Carrie; and so I was completely caught up (Bachman would become known later).
I used to always wait for the paperback; I did, however, make a couple exceptions. The Stand and Different Seasons ( I loved Night Shift so much I couldn't wait for the next short story collection).
I think the book that really solidified me being a life long fan was The Dead Zone. I waited for that one in paper and loved it so much i went back and bought a hardbound copy. His books were a trip, so he became one of many lifelong obsessions.
I read everything through the early/mid 90's, then I finally started taking breaks .What I do these days is, I probably read 4-5 King books every year; a couple that are new or I haven't read yet, and a couple to a few re-reads. This year I re-read The Shining (I think my 3rd time through), and then Doctor Sleep, which I hadn't yet read.
There are still a few MAJOR King works that I haven't read, number one might be Under the Dome. I've been saving that doorstop for the right time; i thought that would've been COVID, but i was reading other things at the time. One of these days though.
I tell myself that each year I'm going to read at least one ENORMOUS novel; I have a pretty long list of them on my "to read" list, and Dome is one of them. This year I read an unabridged copy of The Count of Monte Cristo; all 1450 or so pages of it, and I think it might be the greatest novel I've ever read.
All gentle readers hail Stevie!
