Posted by: BSmurf on Oct 11, 10:39 in response to BSmurf's post I believe that most people agree on ~95% of everything....

Sadly, it's that 5% that people want to focus on 95% of the time!

Even worse, most of that 5% difference of opinion is about stuff that doesn't even really matter in the larger picture of our daily lives, yet we fixate on it as if those issues are the MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER.

I cut the cable TV cord about 15 years ago, and have never regretted it. I'm not one of those "TV is evil" people with the "Kill your television" bumper stickers. Matter of fact, I've got two degrees in mass communications! But I recognize television for what it is: a means of advertising interspersed with the most basic and lame forms of "entertainment" (with a few notable exceptions in programming).

The point is, without all of the dumbing down that television (and talk radio) provides people on a daily basis, is it any wonder that people won't (can't?) think for themselves anymore? "Just tell me what to do" seems to be the overwhelming motto.

Without all that TV static in my life, I've been able to more easily and openly explore what interests me (having an extra 3-6 hours per day NOT watching TV affords lots of luxury time!). Seeking out information on both sides of an issue and making an informed decision regarding my opinion on matters helps me to see through the hype, spin, and general BS. I'm amazed at how so many of these talking heads can sleep at night ($$$).

Summation: Turn off the TV. Gain peace of mind. Explore things that interest you. Learn from things you "think" you're against. If nothing else, you'll be able to hold your own at parties! :)

I believe that most people agree on ~95% of everything. It's the remaining 5% that we're willing to kill one another over. {nm} BSmurf Oct 11, 10:29
