I agree in some ways - we've been told for seven + seasons that everyone's foolish and petty fighting over the throne, because the apocalypse is coming. And now we're going to fight over the throne again, ho hum.
But thematically, it works. Something like Watchmen, where a near-apocalypse (or in the movie, a real apocalypse) happens, and gets the whole world to give up their petty differences and work together for a common goal, is wishful thinking. We're social animals and we're always going to have the "our side and their side" with us, so it makes sense to go back to that.
