It’s because historically, “women’s sports don’t matter”. Women’s soccer was a money loser, and players had to accept low $ to play and fundraiser to go to tournaments, even at an elite level. Today women’s soccer matters a lot more in the profile of the sport and as a revenue earner, but the $ and the conditions haven’t changed enough to catch up with the new reality. The view that “women’s sports don’t matter” still affects how much athletes are paid and teams are funded.
The shorthand version of that is, the athletes are paid less and the team gets less funding because they are women.
