I don't get this logic. Both regions named Holland are to the west, facing the coast. All the rest of the Netherlands is to the north, east
or south of the two regions named Holland.
Also, the Wikipedia-article clearly suggests The Netherlands being the above all correct usage - as does the fact that almost everywhere I see, both official sources, and friends on Facebook, the Netherlands is used. I can copy in a message from Facebook for you:
"I'm from the north ('Holland' is only the western part) and always say 'Netherlands' but when cheering a team 'Holland' is easier. I want to stress that I am not a 'Hollander', they are braggarts with too big mouths."
Since when did Holland become the correct name for the country? I've seen nothing to suggest this. We've always heard it, and it's old - "the flying Hollander" for instance, springs to mind. If you said it was the other way around - that Holland is the old name, and the Netherlands is the new one, I'd believe that. Either way, you are a Hollander, meaning, from the one of the two regions named Holland, and so your opinion doesn't count 
I mean, not in and off itself - but if you can find some official looking document or other source that says Holland is a more correct term for the Netherlands, that could be interesting. Because in all official circumstances, I see the Netherlands used, and so I'll take this guy named Joop's word for it, that Holland is simply used for the entire country, whenever it's easier, such as in cheering on the national team. I mean, who would argue that it's not much easier to say "Go, Holland!", than "Go, the Netherlands!"
