Based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, The Talented Mr. Ripley chronicles a young man (Matt Damon) who is hired to locate a wealthy man's son in Italy. Along the way, however, Ripley gets caught up in the son's extravagant lifestyle, and decides to stay in Europe for a while. In order to maintain his world of wealth and taste, Ripley must employ desperate and questionable means. Highsmith's novel was first adapted for the 1960 French film Purple Noon, which features a different ending than the book. Whether or not Ripley stays true to the novel is still up for speculation. With a cast that also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Jude Law, it appears that this forthcoming Paramount/Miramax effort will be a strong contender come Oscar time.
